A village in the Netherlands with fairytale charm has no cars, with roads being replaced by canals.
Giethoorn, a picturesque village an hour and a half from Amsterdam is often referred to as the ” of the North” due to its network of canals and the absence of roads in its historic centre.
Lined with canals, charming thatched-roof cottages, gardens, and small wooden arch bridges, Giethoorn’s tranquil atmosphere provides a perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
The village has over 180 bridges, many of which are wooden footbridges that connect the small islands where homes and gardens are located.
Boats are the primary mode of transportation. Visitors can explore the village by renting traditional whisper boats, which are quiet, electric-powered vessels ideal for navigating the narrow canals.
Guided boat tours are also available, providing insights into the village’s history and culture while cruising through the scenic waterways.
Aside from boating, Giethoorn is also popular for cycling and walking. Well-maintained paths along the canals offer picturesque routes through the village and the surrounding countryside.
Museum Giethoorn ‘t Olde Maat Uus is a must-visit while visitors are there. The museum provides a glimpse into the village’s history and traditional way of life, showcasing local artefacts and the interiors of old farmhouses.
Apart from the museum, there is the widely popular Weerribben-Wieden National Park. Located near Giethoorn, this national park offers a natural landscape of wetlands, peat bogs, and wildlife, perfect for hiking, bird-watching, and canoeing.
DON’T MISS [REPORT]
Giethoorn has several restaurants and cafes where visitors can enjoy Dutch cuisine, often with beautiful views of the canals. Local specialities include fish dishes, pancakes, and traditional Dutch sweets.
The village is beautiful year-round, but in spring and summer it is lush and green with blooming flowers. In autumn, the changing leaves add a warm colour palette, and in winter, if the canals freeze over, you can experience ice skating in the village.
