Don’t miss… [UPDATE]
The island is renowned among UK holidaymakers for its bustling resorts such as Los Cristianos, Playa de las Americas and Costa Adeje in the south.
However, if you’re seeking a unique experience and an adventure, the northern part of the island is the place to be.
The Anaga Rural Park, a nature reserve situated on Tenerife’s northernmost point, boasts towering mountains, deep valleys, ancient cloud forests and stunning black-sand beaches.
This mountain range, the oldest geological part of the island, was formed by a volcanic eruption seven to nine million years ago and was declared a UNESCO biosphere reserve in 2015.
The park houses the largest laurel forest – often referred to as a cloud forest – on the island, dating back to prehistoric times. Similar forests can also be found in the Azores and Madeira, featuring twisted, moss-covered trees that create a fairytale-like atmosphere.
Visitors can explore the park free of charge, with numerous roads winding through it. However, a free permit is required for those wishing to hike through El Pijaral, known as the enchanted forest, due to daily visitor restrictions.
A must-visit spot within the park is Playa de Benijo, a wild beach characterised by powerful waves and rocky outcrops. One traveller described it on Tripadvisor as “one of the best beaches in Tenerife”, although swimming is not recommended here due to the strong waves and powerful currents.
Skyscanner is currently listing direct flights from Stansted to Tenerife in March, with one-way fares starting from just £15.
However, additional charges may apply for seat selection and baggage allowance.
