Energy gurus have shared an incredibly simple tip that could see your annual energy costs plummet by hundreds of pounds, simply by cleaning the coils on the back of your fridge—a mere two-minute task that’s often overlooked but could save you a whopping £534. With the continuing crisis, Britons are in dire need of such effective home hacks to shave off their soaring energy expenses.

Matthew Alford, the brains behind , gave this insight: “Fridge coils are what keeps the air inside cool and your food fresh. They get surprisingly dirty, which makes them work less efficiently, forcing your fridge to work harder and, therefore, costing you more money on your energy bills.

“Being hidden around the back often means they’re easily forgotten. It’s a quick and easy task – just grab your vacuum and a cloth and in two minutes you can start saving on your monthly energy bill.”

How to clean your refrigerator coils

1. Begin by turning off and unplugging your refrigerator.

2. Locate the coils—typically at the back or bottom of the appliance; you might have to detach a panel or grille to reach them.

3. Delicately vacuum off loose dirt and dust from the coils, then use a cloth to wipe away any residue left behind, taking care to avoid any damage.

4. Once clean, put everything back together and plug in your refrigerator.
