We put together a complete guide to non-tarnish jewelry, along with some of our favourite brands to shop in Canada.

What causes jewelry to tarnish over time?

Pieces made from untreated gold vermeil and sterling silver will naturally tarnish over time, especially when exposed to environmental factors like air pollution, moisture and items that contain sulphur.

Which metals are resistant to tarnishing or best suited for everyday wear?

According to Justine Lançon, Mejuri’s Chief Creative Officer, “14k solid yellow gold is most resistant to tarnishing and is best for day-to-day wear as it is more durable, resistant to tarnishing, and less likely to scratch or lose its shine.”

Sterling silver is another good option, however you’ll want to look for certain kinds. “Opt for pieces that are rhodium-plated, as this coating helps reduce tarnishing and adds a bright, reflective finish,” says Lançon. “Vermeil, which features a layer of thick gold over sterling silver, is also a great option to increase its durability and tarnish resistance.”

“Platinum is another metal that is incredibly durable, tarnish-resistant and doesn’t corrode or lose its shine easily. Renowned for its lasting durability, radiant shine, and distinctive silver-white colour, platinum is a timeless choice.”

What’s the best way to care for jewelry to prevent tarnishing?
