We all know that exploring a new city can work up quite an appetite, so when the opportunity arose to sample singer and TV host Jane McDonald’s favourite pub, we didn’t need much persuading. After a bustling afternoon traversing Wakefield, with pit stops at its two shopping centres, Wakefield Bridge and Chantry Chapel, we decided to satiate our hunger at The Three Houses in Sandal.

A brief Uber ride from Wakefield Kirkgate train station whisked us away from the biting cold into the pub’s inviting warmth.

Although it was relatively quiet, the effervescent staff greeted us warmly, allowing us to settle comfortably at a corner table next to the bar. Our server promptly took our drink orders; I opted for a strawberry and lime Rekorderlig, while my dad chose a pint of Red Stripe.

Upon perusing the menu, we were delighted to spot steak pie. After confirming it was onion-free, we both decided it would make the perfect late lunch or early dinner.

Twenty minutes later, our meals arrived on large round plates, featuring a generous portion of piping hot steak pie, a gravy boat, a metal tub of chips, a heap of peas, and several cauliflower pieces. Cutting into the steak pie was a gastronomic delight, providing the perfect antidote to a chilly February day, reports .

The sight of the steak pie, with its layers upon layers of succulent, tender steak pieces beneath a flaky yet crispy pastry top, had me drooling.

Every bite of the pastry, steak, chips and perfectly cooked al dente cauliflower – all smothered in gravy – was divine, and I found myself unable to resist going back for more.

The chips were flawlessly prepared and chunky – perhaps overly generous, but when has that ever been an issue?

Regrettably, my plate was cleared before I knew it.

However, the portion size was just right, leaving me satisfyingly full and content. Overall, the meal was exquisite and expertly crafted.

It was likely one of the best pies I’ve ever tasted. I eagerly anticipate returning to sample more from the menu.

For two pints and two steak pies at £38.90, it was absolutely worth it!
