Jane Fonda’s strict refusal to retire from acting at 87

icon has been a firm fixture on screens since 1960 when she landed her first role in the romantic comedy Tall Story.

The legendary actress has enjoyed a successful career in the film and TV industry, winning accolades such as two , two , seven , and a Primetime Emmy Award.

Fonda then made her Broadway debut in the 1970 play, There Was a Little Girl, and her highly praised portrayal landed her a highly coveted Tony nomination.

Now, six decades into her career, Fonda opened up about being 87 years old and why she has no plans to slow down.

She shared: “I think, as you get older, you get better at almost everything. I love my work more than ever.”

During a 2023 interview for the film 80 for Brady, Fonda shared: “We’re lucky because we’re old at a time when older people, mostly women, are the fastest-growing demographic in the world. Entertainment is a business, and it has this market that it needs to feed.

“We’ve all stayed healthy, and we were just there, ready – so who else are they gonna hire? She added to .”

That same year saw the release of three new Fonda movies, and she echoed these sentiments to The Reporter.

The actress told the outlet: “Even at the height of my career — whenever that was, I guess in the ’70s — I never had three movies in one year, so I feel pretty lucky.”

Despite this, Fonda once retired in 1991 after three decades of acting, which came after her third marriage to media tycoon Ted Turner.

After returning to screens in the noughties with the box office success, Monster in Law, the star reflected on the reasons for her comeback.

“I left for 15 years, when I married Ted Turner, and I did not think I was gonna come back, ’cause when I married him, I thought it’d be forever.

“But I came back, and frankly, if anybody told me that at 85, I’d be doing this kind of movie, I would have not believed them. So I feel very lucky.”
