For players who have spent years trying to get through qualifying school or don’t have a title to their name, maybe the problem is that they are just trying too hard. When compared to Ryan Searle anwyay, who won his sixth ProTour title at Players Championship 4 in the Netherlands this week.
Searle faced Cameron Menzies in the final in Rosmalen, where he put in a superb display as he romped to an 8-3 win.
‘Heavy metal’ nailed eight of his 12 attempts at doubles and racked up a 100.7 average for his sixth ProTour win.
Searle has now sealed at least one title yearly since his maiden tournament victory in Wigan in 2020. He then triumphed in Barnsley for three successive seasons before winning in Leicester last year.
And that’s despite the 37-year-old claiming to have taken a laidback approach to the sport. After beating Menzies, he claimed: “Throughout my career I’ve basically just done the bare minimum to get by, and luckily enough I’m half decent at darts.”
However, Searle also conceded he had improved his work rate since his performance at the in December. He reached the third round at Ally Pally before a narrow loss to Ryan Joyce.

“I had a bit of a gut-wrenching loss to Ryan at the World Championship because I feel like I played really well,” he said. “As soon as I got back home I’ve been on the practice board. I’m looking to put more effort in this year, so we will see where that takes me.”
Searle reached the final after taking out a pressure 120 checkout to beat Stefan Bellmont 7-6 in the semi-finals. And after becoming the first non-Premier League player to win a ranking title this year, he expressed his delight over continuing his impressive Players Championship record.
“To win six PDC titles is amazing, especially when you look at the list of brilliant players that never won a PDC title,” he added. “Winning a title six years running is a great achievement for me, and if I can win another one this year, that will be another boundary crossed.”
Searle has reached two major televised quarter-finals in his career, the 2021 World Grand Prix and the 2023 World Matchplay. During the latter tournament, he famously recorded a nine-dart finish in a group match victory over Nathan Rafferty.
Admirably, the darts star has also battled the Astigmatism throughout his career. The eye condition means he’s often unable to see where his darts land on the board.
