BBC Breakfast’s Roger Johnson found himself in a spot of awkwardness after posing a “really random” question to a guest during a live TV interview.
The presenter, who was seated on the iconic red sofa on Sunday (February 23) morning with his co-host Rachel Burden, was delivering the day’s top news stories to viewers around the world.
They highlighted that government figures estimate over 9,000 individuals were experiencing homelessness in England as of September the previous year.
A segment followed, featuring reporter Jeremy Ball joining a charity for a night on the streets of Nottinghamshire. In a subsequent discussion with Martin Collett, CEO of English Rural housing association, Roger unexpectedly asked: “Sorry, this is a really random question so forgive me but I notice you are in Chipping Norton which is a really nice part of the Cotswolds.
“Could you go out from there and find somebody having exactly those problems within a short distance from where you are? ” To which Martin responded affirmatively, dispelling the myth that rural areas are immune to poverty.

This moment came just a day after had to cut short his conversation with Simon Smith, the former UK ambassador to , on Saturday’s (February 22) programme due to breaking news.
The broadcaster was compelled to interject, remarking: “Simon, I appreciate your time this morning and your expertise and I apologise for interrupting you but we’ve got to go straight to Gaza where the latest handover of the hostages looks like is about to begin.”, reports Bristol Live.
On location, two hostages were led onto a stage at Rafah under the watchful eye of armed guards. Reports indicated that these individuals were Avera Mengistu, an Israeli of Ethiopian descent who accidentally crossed into Gaza in 2014 and had been held captive ever since, and Tal Shoham, who was captured from Kibbutz Be’eri during a raid on southern conducted by Hamas on October 7, 2023.
