Expert shares how you could be storing your rice wrong – could lead to illness

With rising cases of related bacterial infections, UK households are increasingly searching online for guidance on safe food storage.

Storing rice is which commonly confuses Brits and research shows many are uncertain about how to properly store the popular food component.

Salah Sun, Head of Product Management at has given their advice one of the most searched questions Brits are looking up online: how long does rice last in the fridge?

This is searched up to 5,400 times a month with a 22% year-on-year increase showing growing concerns about keeping leftover cooked rice.

“Many people don’t realise that rice can be particularly problematic when it comes to food poisoning,” says Salah Sun.

“Cooked rice should be cooled quickly and stored in the fridge within an hour of cooking. When properly stored in an airtight container, can last up to 24 hours.

“However, if it’s been left sitting at room temperature for longer than two hours, it’s safer to dispose of it.”

Last summer, the UK saw a of E. coli, resulting in 288 people falling ill with food poisoning, approximately half of which required hospital treatment.

Hospital admissions from salmonella were also reported to be at an all-time high across the UK, with 1,468 cases linked to the bacteria recorded between April 2022 and April 2023.

Research shows Brits most commonly seek advice online for storing rice, and eggs.

Salah adds: “The rise in food poisoning cases has clearly sparked concern among British households about proper food storage.

“While many people may be more confident in their cooking abilities, the food storage side of things often creates uncertainty, particularly with foods known to pose higher risks.”

Another important element of food storage is fridge hygiene which can be an overlooked but crucial element of food safety.

If you plan to store leftovers in your fridge, you should wipe down your fridge-shelves once a week and you should also do a deep clean once a month.

Your fridge should always be between 3-5C which is the recommended temperature for the appliance to ensure your food is .
