Classic car owners given chance to race on the world’s oldest motorsport track

Owners of a wide variety of interesting are being given the opportunity to take them up one of the UK’s most famous .

The specialist insurance company Hagerty are holding an open day at the Shelsey Walsh hill climb track on May 17, with all types of vehicle welcome.

Mark Roper, Managing Director of , noted the event will give motorists a rare chance to take their beloved car up the hill, no matter its age or performance capabilities.

He explained: “The Hagerty Hill Climb at Shelsley Walsh is one of our favourite events of the year. It presents a wonderful opportunity for owners to enjoy their cars in a safe environment and to interact with the throughout the day.

Based in rural Worcestershire, Shelsley Walsh is the world’s oldest motorsport venue that has continuous use, having opened 120 years ago.

Spanning nearly 1km (0.6 miles), the famous track has been used by a wide range of the most famous drivers in motorsport history, including Sir Stirling Moss, Martin Brundle, and Derek Bell.

Currently, the fastest time ever recorded at Shelsley Walsh is 22.37 seconds, which was recorded in August 2021 by Sean Gould in a Gould GR59 Formula Car.

Nevertheless, Hagerty reassured drivers that they do not need to go at the pace of a racing driver in order to take on the famous hill track. Those taking part in the event are able to go at a pace that suits them and their vehicle best.

In order to drive up Shelsley Walsh, drivers will need to pay a £150 entry fee, or £135 if they book before March 1 and a further 25% off for members of the Hagerty Drivers Club. The fee will give them the at least three attempts to travel up the hill.

Spectators can also visit to watch a wide range of interesting cars climb up the track at a cost of £30 per vehicle (or £25 if booked in February) – no matter how many occupants are on board.
