A beautiful UK city is all set to inject £17 million to change the face of its huge centre. The site of the former Debenhams store in Cardiff city centre will now house a new public square.
The plans, approved by Cardiff City Council, include setting up a splash pad and space for outdoor performances, markets, local street food vendors and other events.
The former city centre department store, which closed in 2021, is already in the process of being demolished.
However, the St David’s shopping centre scheme proposes to retain a part of the former store for leisure use.
Developers Landsec have invested a massive amount to transform the site into a public square.

The investment follows research and public consultation with over 5,000 locals, which showed that 75% of Cardiff residents believed access to nature and green space should be a priority for the developers.
Helen Morgan, St David’s shopping centre director, said the planned redevelopment would be “revolutionary” for Cardiff.
Ms Morgan said: “Receiving approval is a huge milestone in this landmark development, and we are delighted that Cardiff City Council and the community have recognised the positive impact that this space will have on the city.
“A new city square will be revolutionary for this part of Cardiff, giving locals and visitors even more reason to spend time at St David’s and in the city centre.”

The approved plans include a landscaped square with new trees and native plants to enhance biodiversity and access to nature in the city centre, alongside a splash pad for families.
It will also have an open space with a stage for performances, and may host markets, street food vendors, and other events for the community.
Several new additions are set to arrive at St David’s shopping centre this year.
American fast-food chain Carl’s Jr. is scheduled to open in spring 2025, while sportswear retailer JD will launch a new 32,000 sq ft store later in the year.
Additionally, hot chocolate specialists Knoops are expected to open in the coming months.
