Lemon steam
Lemon has natural degreasing and cleansing powers which makes it ideal for loosening grime and eliminating odours. This hack only requires a lemon, some water and a microwave-safe bowl.
Start by slicing the lemon in half and squeeze the juice into the bowl. Add the lemon halves and water and microwave on high for three minutes. The solution will boil and create steam.
Allow it to sit inside the microwave for two more minutes without opening the door and then remove the bowl. Wipe clean with a cloth and you’re done.
The steam works to soften any food residue meaning they’re easy to wipe away and the lemon leaves a fresh scent.
The vinegar hack
White vinegar is another powerful cleaning agent that can cut through grease and disinfect. Simply combine vinegar and water in a bowl, microwave for five minutes, allow to sit for an additional five minutes without opening the door.
Then, remove the bowl and wipe the interior clean with a cloth. This hack is ideal for loosening stubborn stains and neutralising odours.
The damp towel technique
Simple yet effective, this technique only requires a damp cloth or sponge to be placed into a microwave. Heat it on high for two minutes, leave the door closed for another minute so the steam builds up and then carefully remove the cloth.
It will be very hot so be mindful when wiping the interior down. The steam from the cloth will loosen any grime and make it easy to clean it away without using harsh chemicals.

No Lemon or vinegar? Try the water-steam method
If you don’t have lemon or vinegar on hand, simply use water. Fill a microwave-safe bowl with water and heat it on high for two minutes. Let it sit inside the microwave for another two minutes to allow the steam to soften dried food particles and grime.
Finish by wiping the interior with a paper towel or microfibre cloth. This quick and chemical-free method is an easy way to refresh your microwave with minimal effort.
