Banish bad smells in minutes with his handy .
We don’t like to admit it, but foul odours can settle in our homes for a variety of reasons. Perhaps you’ve something using particularly pungent ingredients, or maybe you have a who mistook your furniture for a toilet.
Not for a long time can also create musty smells – and you may also have issues with bad smells if you or your family members are particularly active, as you’ll sweat a lot and could transfer that scent to your sofas and other soft furnishings.
While it might seem embarrassing, unpleasant odours are something that everyone has to deal with from time to time, so you shouldn’t be ashamed if you find yourself needing to freshen up your home.
According to one home expert, you don’t even need to splash out on expensive air fresheners or room sprays to try and mask the smell. All you need is one common food item that most of us already have – and it’ll cost you just 30p if you don’t.

Laura De Barra shared a video on in which she said all you need is some water and the juice of a lemon to get rid of any odours in your house. And you don’t even need to do any cleaning, as the mixture does all the work for you.
She said: “I’m going to show you something, and once you start doing it, you’ll never look back. It’s literally as simple as adding some lemon to water and boiling it. This was my absolute go-to when I was managing like 30 properties – I’d be given the keys to a flat and within 24 hours I’d have to have that flat perfect for the next person moving in.
“That meant no odours; I had to clean everything and have it immaculate. I was always trying to use natural cleaning products because when you’re doing all that work, you don’t want to be using loads of chemicals all the time. Room sprays were not an option.”
The woman went on to explain that all you have to do is squeeze the juice of a lemon into a saucepan with water and bring it to a boil. Then simply leave it to simmer on the hob, and the steam will help to cut through any odours in “as little as 10 minutes”.
She added: “The acidity of the lemon can basically break down molecules in the odour, is the easiest way to describe it. So instead of masking the odours with a spray that you also have to breathe in, this is going to work its magic on the odours in the room.”
Laura said you shouldn’t turn on your extractor fan while doing this, as you’ll just get rid of all the steam that needs to permeate the room. She also said you could swap the lemon for some white vinegar if you’d prefer. But while this will get rid of the bad smell, it may leave a vinegary one behind – which often isn’t as pleasant as lemon.
Commenters on Laura’s video praised her for her helpful tip. Others asked how they could make the trick work in rooms that are not the kitchen and were told that if they transfer the saucepan to the desired room on a heatproof mat after the water has boiled, it will still let off the steam required to clear the odour.
One person said: “Thank you in the name of so many chemical-sensitive people who have issues with renting an odour-free Airbnb.” Another added: “Love this! I usually add orange slices and a cinnamon stick to mine!”
How to get rid of unpleasant odours in your home
- Identify the source: check for common culprits such as rotting food in bins or the fridge, areas where your pet frequents, and areas that could harbour mould. Clean up thoroughly by removing waste and spoiled items.
- Deep clean affected areas: Wash and disinfect rubbish bins, clean out your fridge, deep clean your carpets with a carpet cleaner or baking soda, and mop floors and hard surfaces.
- Neutralise odours: Many natural products, including baking soda, white vinegar, and coffee grounds, can be used to neutralise odours in your home. Place these in areas where the odour is most noticeable.
- Improve air circulation: Open windows to ventilate your space, and consider investing in an air purifier that can help circulate fresher, cleaner air throughout your home.
