“With exceptionally flat water and smooth, consistent wind, Squamish, British Columbia offers some of the best kitesurfing in the world if you’re a freestyler.”
So writes kiteboarder Rachel Cavanaugh on adventure travel magazine 57hours.com. Jenny Wun, a buyer at a new Polygon project in Squamish, would probably agree.
“Squamish is a kiteboarding mecca,” says Wun, a Vancouver-based realtor who took up the sport during COVID. “One of the best spots is Howe Sound. Every time I kiteboarded up there, which was one to two times a week during the pandemic, I would never want to leave. I would never want to come back to Vancouver.”
With 36 homes, the main building is the smallest of the three and positioned at an angle to the other two, which bracket the courtyard. These buildings have 75 and 58 homes. Homes are one-, two- and three-bedrooms with over-height ceilings. Each building has its own lobby and, on the main floor, retail.
Goldie Alam, senior vice-president of marketing for Polygon Realty Limited, says that she’s been seeing interest from first-time and move-up buyers.
“We’re attracting people who come to these hiking trails as a destination, if they’re not already living here,” Alam said. “It’s one of the things that people love about the area.”
Most homes include in-suite storage for sports gear and, in the main bedroom, walk-in closets. All homes feature a spa-inspired walk-in shower and integrated bench seating. And each has a covered outdoor space with lighting to extend residents’ living space. Some have views of the Chief.
One-bedrooms start from 650 sq. ft with prices that begin at $619,900. “You can get a two-bedroom up here for the price of a one bedroom in the city,” Alam said. The three-bedrooms average 1,180 sq. ft.
As of this writing, 46 homes in the two buildings that have gone on market have been sold. Construction is expected to begin in the spring, with the first homeowners taking possession in the spring of 2027.
The buildings’ wood-and-stone exterior with black-framed windows and pitched rooflines recall a mountain lodge. Amenities include a fitness centre, sauna, social lounge, meeting room and workspaces.
These are all located in the smallest building, which faces Pemberton Avenue and is fronted by a public park with covered seating and a children’s playground. A dog wash and bike repair room are on the parking level under the courtyard.
Besides access to flat water and consistent wind, Wun says she was attracted to Three Summits because of the developer and for the area’s market stability.
“I knew Polygon built great product and great homes,” said Wun, who worked for the company as a sales coordinator then sales manager from 2003 to 2007.
She also liked “the rent and the property value growth. I find it more stable in Squamish than Whistler. I feel like there’s a little bit more volatility and it’s too recreational in Whistler versus Squamish. People do make it a home there. It’s a really nice community and vibe.”
Squamish is far enough from the city — an hour from Vancouver — to get away from it all while maintaining business and other ties there. It’s also only 45 minutes from Whistler.
Wun intends on keeping her condo in the city and to use her Squamish residence as a getaway. She and her partner bought a two-bedroom so they can host guests. A ground floor unit, its patio opens out into the courtyard.
“I have a dog, so just being able to enjoy nature within the community without having to walk outside of the property was a big selling feature for me,” she said. “The easy access to the outdoors allows me to set up my hammock and read in the sun with my dog.”
And her new home promises to give her plenty of more time to kiteboard.
“The sport provided a perfect escape from the stress and restrictions of lockdown life,” Wun said.
“I love spending time in nature and in water, and kiteboarding allowed me to combine both passions while also challenging myself physically and mentally. The camaraderie of the community on and off the shoreline has taken me on incredible adventures, including an unforgettable kiteboarding expedition to Brazil. Spending time in Squamish expanded my world in ways I never anticipated.”
