Severance fans ‘figure out’ meaning behind Helena sex scene after spotting foreshadowing

Severance fans were left reeling after Helly R (played by Britt Lower) was exposed as her Outie alter-ego Helena Eagan last week in Woe’s Hollow, after the jury was previously out over who’d gone back to the Severed floor following the OTC breach in the season one finale.

Now, there are questions over who will be sent back and whether the MDR team will even trust Helly again if she returns.

Also, viewers of the TV+ are wondering what will happen to the burgeoning romance between Mark S (Adam Scott) and Helly after he was tricked by Helena into sleeping with him.

Audiences will have to continue to watch to find out whether Helly will return again and whether their relationship has been scuppered by Helena.

Either way, it appears Mark S has ended up in a throuple of sorts with Helly and Helena. It seemed Helena became sexually interested in Mark after she kept re-watching the passionate kiss between him and Helly.

Some fans have taken to to discuss the moment and also made an astute observation involving some foreshadowing from earlier in the season after Milchick (Trammell Tillman) told Mark how Ms Cobel (Patricia Arquette) had developed a fixation on him and wanted to be a in throuple with his Innie and Outie.

One Redditor posted: “Does anyone else feel like Helena is potentially going to develop feelings for Mark also?”

Another person chimed in: “Yea this is what I’ve been saying. Milchick mentioning the throuple was foreshadowing Mark/Helly/Helena [sic].”

“It wouldn’t surprise me if Helena feels very trapped and maybe insecure but she has to hide it in order to be the face of Lumen. She also seems like she’s kind of at the whims of the company and her father. Seeing her innie rebel, be confident, find love, and make a stand against the company is probably something she’s always wanted [sic],” a third said.

Another person wrote: “I think Helena already has feelings for Mark, she just doesn’t know it yet. If you can carry the hurt with you, like Petey said, you could also carry the love.”

Other fans also discussed the consent issues in the sex scene with many suggesting Mark S was violated by Helena.

One viewer commented: “That’s one of the many great questions that the show will have to answer if the show is serious about displaying real moral dilemmas about this chip technology. As they say IRL, with every new technology comes new crimes along with it. I would personally say, yes, Mark never gave consent to Helena, so therefore it’s a sex crime [sic].”

Someone else said: “Yes there were many issues of consent. We don’t know if outie Mark would consent to his innie having sex with anyone. So that’s unclear. But innie Mark thought it was Helly when it was not, which is rape by deception. I’m unsure if Helly was raped because she shares a body with Helena and Helly would probably want to have sex with innie Mark, but we can’t know for sure [sic].”

A third posted: “I see it much like twins in this instance. Say you were dating one twin, then one day the other comes by and seduces you under the guise of them being your partner. That’s a clear case of rape in my opinion. Good question, and I was asking myself the same during that scene.”

Severance’s creator Dan Erickson weighed in on the consent issues in Woe’s Hollow and said it was something the writers wanted the explore.

He stated how both Mark and Helly had been used, telling TVLine: “Mark thought he was with one person when he was actually sort of with a different person. And then for Helly, it’s a very troubling thing to know that something like that happened without you mentally being there.”

Erickson said the issue of bodily autonomy was something they didn’t want to “shy away from”.

Severance season two will continue to explore this topic as fans see the consequences playing out for all the characters – and both their Innies and Outies.
