Get your white towels sparkling again with this simple .
If you’ve got lots of white laundry, you’ll know just how quickly it can lose its shine. It feels as though a few washes are all it takes for whites to start looking grey, and before long, you’re spending a fortune on in the hopes of restoring your washing to its former glory.
The issue seems to hit towels the hardest – as they’re constantly in and out of the wash. When they’re not in the washing machine, they’re doing the hard job of getting our bodies dry after a bath or shower, and all this regular use means they never stay white for very long.
But there is something you can do to restore the white gleam to your towels. What’s more, you don’t need to break the bank on stain removers or bleach either, as all you need is a 35p ingredient.
If you’re lucky, you might even have the product in your cupboard already, particularly if you’re keen on tips and tricks that involve swapping harsh chemicals for natural products.

The hack was shared on after someone asked for help brightening dull towels. They said: “My white towels have become dull grey over the years. I recently washed them using the whites function on my washer and included bleach. However, they are still a dull grey. Is there any way to brighten them more?”
In response, one of the top comments urged the person to try using white vinegar, a cooking ingredient that’s become a popular natural cleaning product.
The comment read: “White vinegar. The towels are loaded with old detergent. Put them in the washing machine with white vinegar.”

Other popular comments included using OxiClean stain remover, an American product similar to Vanish that we have in the UK. Someone else even recommended washing the towels in hot water only before putting them out in the sun to dry.
One person said: “Wash towels on hot with no fabric softener/scent beads/any of that junk, and don’t use dryer sheets if you choose to tumble dry. The best method is a hot wash followed by air drying in sunlight.”
Another added: “Oxiclean White Revive at a high concentration, like the highest level it lists on the container. Soak overnight and then wash as normal in hot water.”
How to brighten dull white towels
You can use a combination of white vinegar and baking soda to restore white towels by following these steps:
- Place your towels in the washing machine
- Add half a cup of baking soda directly into the drum
- Avoid adding any detergent or fabric softener
- Run the towels through a hot water wash
- For the rinse cycle, add half a cup of white vinegar to the rinse compartment
- Dry your towels thoroughly, either in the tumble dryer or line-dry in sunlight
It’s recommended that you do not mix baking soda and vinegar in the same cycle, as you’ll get better results if you wait to add the vinegar until the rinse phase. You should also always avoid using fabric softener on towels as it can make them less absorbent, and towels should always be washed separately from your regular laundry.
