Chelsea were thrown off guard by the extent of Nicolas Jackson’s injury after the striker had initially reacted well to his hamstring problem. has revealed that the Blues were surprised when they learned that the 23-year-old could be out for up to eight weeks.

Jackson is expected to be out until April with an issue suffered in training. It leaves Maresca without his first-choice striker for the majority of the remainder of the season.

initially feared that it was a muscular problem but had no idea that Jackson could miss so much football. Maresca has revealed that the Senegal international has responded well to his fitness problem.

The boss said: “We knew it was a muscular problem but not how important it was. His reaction was good so we didn’t think it was a big injury. Unfortunately, he had the scan and it is an important one – he will be out for six to eight weeks.

“Nico will be out until the international break, probably available after the international break. will be out for a while. Romeo Lavia is in the process to come back with us, Benoit Badiashile exactly the same. Wesley Fofana needs two or three weeks to be 100 per cent fit with us.”
