A car has driven into a crowd of people in Munich, police have confirmed.

Munish police said: “There is currently a major police operation in the area of ​​Dachauer Straße / Seidlstraße. We are on site with strong forces for you.”

Unconfirmed reports suggested at least 15 people had been injured in the attack.

The attack comes the day before the Munich Security Conference, a major political event which is set to host discussions between US Vice President JD Vance and Ukrainian President following Us PResident ‘s phone call with Russian President .

Munich mayor confirms children injured in attack

Mayor Dieter Reiter said in a statement: “The police chief has just informed me that a vehicle drove into a group of people and unfortunately many people were injured, including children. I am deeply shocked. My thoughts are with the injured.

“The police have arrested the driver of the vehicle, but the exact circumstances are currently unclear. I am of course still in close contact with the police chief and am on my way to get an idea of ​​the situation on site.”

The latest attack in a German city

The incident is the latest in a series of attacks where cars have been used as weapons against large crowds.

In December, a car rammed crowds at Magdeburg Christmas market killing 11 people and injuring at least 80.

Last month, two people including a two-year-old child, were killed when a man went on a stabbing ramnpage in the Bavarian city of Aschaffenburg in Germany.

There is a heavy police presence around the scene in Munich as police confirm that the suspect has been “secured”.

Driver ‘secured’ on site

Police say that the driver has been “secured on site” and poses “no further danger”.

No further details have been given about the condition of the attacker with local media reporting that a person was shot by police.

‘People crying and shaking’

One eye witness describes that “a person was lying on the street and a young man was taken away by the police.”

It comes a day before the Munich Security Conference

Tomorrow, the Munich Security Conference will see senior politicians and the top brass from militaries from over 50 countries descend on Munich for the annual security conference.

JD Vance is due to meet Ukrainian President at the conference following President Trump’s phone call with yesterday.

Both are scheduled to arrive in Munich tonight.
