Former striker Teddy Sheringham has urged the club against splashing an eye-watering transfer fee to reunite with Sporting superstar Viktor Gyokeres this summer. Instead, the great has suggested an audacious swoop for Alexander Isak amid his breathtaking exploits at .

Amorim has unsurprisingly been strongly tipped to pursue Gyokeres after taking him to Lisbon from Coventry City.

The 26-year-old flourished into one of Europe’s most prolific goalscorers under his watch and has scored 34 goals in 35 games this season.

He will reportedly be available in the summer for around £60million, and United are expected to be in the market for a new striker to solve their goalscoring woes.

However, while Gyokeres represents the obvious top target for Amorim, Sheringham believes it would be too big a risk.

“A goal scorer is a goal scorer. He’s got to come across, he’s got to get used to the pace of the Premier League. You know, it’s a risk,” Sheringham told .

“You know, you start paying big money for a foreign centre forward that’s only really done it in the Portuguese league and the Championship. There’s a big difference in the level.

” haven’t got time to be able to bed in players. I know he knows the manager, so it will help, but if he’s still not going to get the service, what’s his confidence going to be like as well?

“It’s all about how you’re going to play. If you’re going to feed the centre forwards, then break the bank and get someone in that can score the goals, but if you’re not going to feed him, then your problems are there.”

was ‘s first-choice target in the summer of 2023 before United baulked at ‘s asking price and instead signed for £72m.

Sheringham has suggested the ship has sailed for the England captain, now thriving at Bayern Munich, to land at Old Trafford in the coming years.

But, as unrealistic as the prospect currently is, the treble winner raised Isak as the most attractive option after watching the Gyokeres’ Sweden team-mate score 17 goals in 22 Premier League games this term.

He added: “Is the right man now? Probably not. I know he’s still scoring goals for Bayern Munich, but I don’t know if it would have the same impression on everybody if they were to get him now.

“United need to start going for younger guns, but I mean, who’s out there? Would Isak come away from to go to Man United at the moment?

“You’d like to think he would, being a Man United fan, but I’m not so sure he would, so the further they fall down the pecking order, the less chance they’ve got of signing top players.”
