Bruno Fernandes stressed the importance of Manchester United matching his ambition before penning a contract extension until 2027 in the summer. It’s fair to assume the Portuguese playmaker was hoping for better than 13th in the Premier League with 29 points and 28 goals from 24 games before the season started.

United are on course to smash their record-low finish in the competition, which set last season by ending up in eighth.

The Dutchman couldn’t improve results before his subsequent sacking in November, and has discovered the magnitude of the task he inherited the hard way.

United’s continued struggles have sparked questions about whether Fernandes will decide to take up an exit offer this summer after rejecting such approaches last year.

Amorim’s captain turns 31 this year, and his trophy cabinet doesn’t represent the sensational player he has been in the Premier League and at Sporting.

Former United defender Paul Parker isn’t convinced the club can match Fernandes’ ambitions before his contract expires.

And he is concerned that the vast recruitment required to achieve that goal could prove difficult this summer due to financial restrictions that limited January spending.

“Can match his ambitions? Not at this moment in time. It will take at least two windows. And I mean good windows,” Parker told Express Sport on behalf of Instant Casino.

“There has to be a lot of offloading before they can push on actually to make things better or look better on paper, and then you’ve got to work with the new arrivals.

“So I don’t know what’s going to happen. Are going to be able to spend because of the talk of the new stadium now?

“We’ve seen clubs fall under that because of spending, and whatever they do offload, they’re going to be losing money on because of having to cut contracts short.

“So again, I think everyone’s foreseeing a tough summer for . There’s going to be all the talk and no action.”

However, Parker did insist that the ball is on United’s side of the court when it comes to deciding Fernandes’ future this summer.

He believes that the crucial No.8 will only be allowed to leave if there is an opportunity to make a profit on the £47m paid for his signature in 2020.

Parker added: “Well, the thing about it is he’s got no control over leaving. So the only thing that is going to let him leave is if the club sell him at a major profit now.

“On Fernandes, they’re going to want… they’ll start at £80million, something like that. So he’s in no position to demand. He can demand, but he’s got no control of it as such.”
