Twelve people have been left injured after a grenade attack on a bar in the city of on Wednesday evening.

The incident occurred just after 8pm in a crowded bar with two people being left in critical condition in hospital, authorities say.

Prosecutor François Touret-de-Courcy told journalists at the scene: “Someone came in and threw a grenade, apparently without saying a word, and ran away.”

He added that investigators have not yet identified a motive for the attack although he did not believe it to be terror related.

Investigators are looking at potential links to organised crime and drug trafficking with Touret-de-Courcy adding that the “act of extreme violence may be linked to a settling of scores.”

According to reports, the grenade wielding suspect was also seen carrying a Kalashnikov assault rifle.

Mayor Eric Piolle wrote on X: “I condemn in the strongest terms the criminal act of unprecedented violence that occurred in a business in the Olympic Village district, causing more than 10 injuries, several of them serious.

“I thank the rescue and security forces for their rapid intervention.

“We are monitoring the situation closely. The City will provide its assistance as it always does.”

The attack happened at a bar in the Olympic Village, built when the city hosted the 1968

The bar was described as “a spot where locals and people from outside the neighborhood gather, especially to watch football matches,” by Deputy Mayor Chloé Pantel.

France’s Health Minister Yannick Neuder is expected to visit victims and emergency staff at Grenoble University Hospital this morning.
