Sidney McIntyre-Starko died of fentanyl poisoning despite students promptly phoning 911 and campus security officers arriving with naloxone, which they waited too long to use.
The B.C. Coroners Service announced Thursday the inquest will be held in late April and early May in Burnaby, and that these hearings are called when there is a “public interest” in the case.
A coroner’s inquest does not assign fault in a death, but rather determines how it happened, makes recommendations to prevent similar deaths in the future, and ensures the public that the circumstances surrounding a person’s death will not be overlooked or ignored.
When Sidney, 18, collapsed in a busy first-year residence, students promptly called 911 and campus security, as they had been told to do in an emergency.
By then her brain had been starved of oxygen.
B.C. Emergency Health Services also maintained its 911 call-taker did nothing wrong in Sidney’s death.
More to come …
