BBC Breakfast shake-up as Charlie Stayt replaced by co-star at the last minute

BBC Breakfast host Charlie Stayt was replaced by his co-star at the last minute on Thursday (February 13).

Today’s edition of the hit morning news programme saw regular host present the biggest headlines alongside co-star Ben Thompson, who often steps in when the main hosts are off.

Charlie joined Breakfast as a relief presenter in 2006 before being confirmed as its Friday to Sunday host in 2007. He used to stand in for the Monday to Wednesday presenters before Jon Kay officially replaced Dan Walker in 2022.

After the programme moved to the studios in Salford, Charlie and Naga became the regular presenters from Thursday to Saturday morning every week.

Jon and also front the programme between Mondays and Wednesdays.

It is unclear why Charlie was absent from the programme, and he has yet to address it on social media.

On today’s Breakfast, Naga and Ben were joined by Mike Bushell, who presented the latest sports news, including Wednesday’s (February 12) heated Premier League match between Everton and Liverpool.

Matt Taylor also stepped in for , who was also absent, to present the weather.

Elsewhere on the programme, Naga and Ben announced “breaking” news on the UK economy, with the Office for National Statistics confirming that the economy grew by 0.1% in the final quarter of 2024, following three months of no growth.

The pair handed over to correspondent Ben Boulos, who explained the importance of the new figures via video link from a Newcastle tea factory.

“It doesn’t sound much, but remember the expectation had been that it had shrunk, so this will be welcome news for the chancellor, for the government. They have repeatedly said that economic growth is the UK’s top priority; it is their focus, and what they feel that the UK really needs to focus on,” Ben shared.

He added: “This latest figure comes just a week, though, after the Bank of England halved its growth forecast for the coming year, expecting the UK economy growth by just 0.75% in 2025.”
