Investigators are now asking anyone who may have dashboard camera footage from the area between midnight and 1 a.m. on Feb. 11 to contact police.

Richmond police warn of possible distraction thefts following arrest

Police are warning of distraction thefts after a woman’s purse was snatched from her car after she got out to inspect what she thought was a punctured tire.

On Feb. 6 just after 10:15 p.m., police were called to the 8300-block of Lansdowne Road for what was reportedly a theft in progress with a man being held by two Good Samaritans. Police arrived at the scene and a suspect was arrested.

The victim then told police she was getting into her car when a woman knocked on her window to point out one of her car tire’s had been punctured. When the driver got out of her car to check, a suspect approached and allegedly grabbed her purse from the front seat.

The woman then said she confronted the suspect, at which point he dropped the purse and began to run before two Good Samaritans stepped in to grab him and call police.

Marco Bryans Neyra Sanchez is charged with one count of theft.

Cpl. Adriana O’Malley with Richmond RCMP said police believe there may be an accomplice or other suspects still at large. In distraction thefts, there is often one individual who distracts the victim, while another individual moves in unnoticed to commit a theft.

“We have seen similar distraction thefts in the past escalate into a series of incidents,” said O’Malley. She reminded people to “remain cautious and vigilant” if approached by a stranger in a parking lot.

Drivers are advised to keep their cars locked and to assess the situation from inside the car and to call for help from a trusted source.

O’Malley also thanked the bystanders who stepped in to restrain the suspect.

Anyone who may have witnessed the incident or who has information about and have not spoken to police are asked to contact investigators at 604-278-1212.
