Celebrations was the topic of conversation during a recent Overlap recording
Neal Maupay has hit back at Paul Scholes after the former midfielder criticised him for “taking the p**s”.
Maupay found himself at the unlikely centre of a storm during a debate on The Overlap regarding players celebrating.
The panel had been discussing Myles Lewis-Skelly’s celebration from ’s 5-1 victory over earlier this month – a move that was interpreted as a dig at .
Sticking up for the youngster, a panel member asked Paul Scholes and Jamie Carragher: “What’s the difference between that and Maddison doing the darts thing though.”
They had instead meant Maupay imitating Spurs ace Maddison with his signature darts celebration after scoring a goal away to the north Londoners last season.
After the initial confusion about what was being referred to was cleared up, Scholes chimed in with: “He’s an idiot… he just takes the p**s doesn’t he?”
It was received with laughs inside the studio, but it was on social media where the comment garnered the most traction.
So much so, Maupay himself got in on the action, with his official X account releasing a post saying: “Surprised Paul Scholes can fit my name in his mouth alongside his daughter’s toes,” accompanied by a foot emoji.
