But it was her stunning jacket which was a sweet nod to the late Princess of Wales.

Meghan wore Doen’s Duccio jacket in castle grey (£563) – now sold out online – which, according to the brand, is inspired by “the sharp suiting styles of the ‘70s”.

The brand claims the jacket is a favourite of the co-founders Margaret and Katherine and features an exaggerated collar with a notched lapel, full-length sleeves, and a tailored silhouette—plus a welt pocket at the breast and flap pockets at the waist.

Princess Diana wore a very similar grey jacket on many occasions in the past, as she regularly favoured velvet lapels for some of her suits.

In 1984, Diana made two major appearances wearing a grey pinstripe coat by Jan Van Velden with a similarly exaggerated collar and notched lapel, but she paired it with a white shirt, a bow tie, and black heels.

In March, she wore the outfit to visit a health centre in Lisson Grove, London. A few months later, in November, she wore it again but with longer hair, a poppy, and bright red shoes to visit Barnardo’s, a charity she was patron of, in London.

Meanwhile, it’s not only Meghan who has been inspired by her late mother-in-law’s timeless style.

The duchess’s sister-in-law, the Princess of Wales, has also sported similar looks over the years.

In October 2018, Princess Kate visited Coach Core Essex in London wearing a black and white tweed Smythe blazer with a collar featuring a velvet lapel, just like Princess Diana’s.

Four years later, in 2022, Kate wore a similar look for her visit to Denmark. Kate’s coat was designed by Catherine Walker and was described online as a “sharply tailored gunmetal grey Birdseye cashmere and wool coat, with black lapels and cuffs, based on an 18th century naval frockcoat.”
