Liam Payne’s ex Maya Henry breaks silence on relationship nearly four months after death

Nearly four months after the tragic death of star in Buenos Aires, Argentina, his former fiancée Maya Henry has finally spoken out about their tumultuous relationship and the profound impact his passing has had on her. The 25 year old model and socialite was romantically involved with Payne intermittently from 2018 to 2022, and they even contemplated marriage before their high-profile split.

In a heartfelt revelation to Maya opened up about the complexities of their love story and the reasons behind their eventual separation.

Henry shared with the magazine on Tuesday: “While I loved him deeply, he did things that hurt me in ways I’ll never fully understand, and he continued to hurt me years after we broke up,” adding, “On drugs, he became someone unrecognisable — so different from his sober self.”

She continued, expressing her futile attempts to help him: “I kept hoping each incident would be a wake-up call for him to get help, but it never was. I tried to be there for him. I loved him so much that I convinced myself I could fix things.”

Despite their deep connection and serious commitment, which included an engagement, the relationship began to unravel in 2022. Maya stood by Payne through his “by him in his darkest moments,” yet her support couldn’t overcome the challenges they faced, reports

She candidly admitted, “Initially, it was the drug use and addictions that tore us apart,” and acknowledged the struggle of being involved with someone battling addiction: “Anyone who has been with an addict understands how difficult that is.”

Maya opened up about her relationship with Liam, admitting she had naively thought she could “fix things” and change him if she stayed long enough. This often led to her “ignoring every red flag” and placing herself in “unsafe” situations.

Despite her best efforts, the couple eventually split, leaving Maya feeling an overwhelming sense of “emptiness”. The breakup was particularly hard for her as she came to terms with the extent of what she had been through.

“The love I gave, the sacrifices I made — they weren’t enough because they never could be,” she confessed. “I wasn’t just heartbroken; I felt defrauded, as so many women in my position would. But what I do know is this: It wasn’t about me or anything I did. It was about struggles beyond my control. And in the end, I had to choose myself. I had to walk away, no matter how much it hurt, because staying in his world meant losing myself.”

Liam tragically died after falling 40 feet from a hotel balcony in October 2024. The singer had been open about his struggles with alcohol and drug use in the years leading up to his death.

He even attempted to destigmatise the issue by revealing he had attended a 100-day rehab programme in 2023, demonstrating his determination to overcome his addiction.

Cassidy, who was romantically involved with Liam for two years leading up to his untimely demise and accompanied him on holiday in Argentina, expressed disbelief over his sudden loss: “We were in such a great place, just full of love; he was so happy and positive,” she shared with the publication. “And I just can’t even believe the way things truly ended.”

Reflecting on her departure from Argentina just before his death, she conveyed deep regret: “Obviously if I knew, if I could see into the future, I would never have left Argentina. I never, ever thought this event would occur.”
