Labour have taken one title from the Tories — and Keir Starmer will be cringing

I had grave doubts about ever since she told the world in 2002 that her own were “the nasty party”. For God’s sake, what a stupid thing to say.

How politically inept, to give other parties such an easy yet devastating weapon with which to beat the endlessly over the head. And here are those same opponents, 22 years later, still using that line. Why wouldn’t they? Thanks Theresa.

But it’s now dawning on the British public that there is indeed a nasty party out there, but that, contrary to what Theresa told us all those years ago, it isn’t the after all. No, it’s Labour.

Of course, many of us realised that long ago. The evidence was there in front of our eyes. presided over a culture of bullying in Downing Street and called a voter “a bigot” once she was safely out of earshot. denounced her opponents as “scum”.

Neil Kinnock wished a fatal heart attack on the Tory MP Eric Pickles. Labour election ads targeted ’s wife. Blatant Institutional antisemitism led the Equality and Human Rights Commission to report that Labour was “responsible for unlawful acts of harassment and discrimination”.

Andrew Gwynne

Don’t miss…

And since July last year, in a complete reversal of what was promised, pensioners have had their fuel allowance snatched away (they tend to vote Tory after all), WASPI women have been abandoned, farmers have been targeted and small businesses terrorised with humongous tax rises.

Oh, and Mike Amesbury violently assaulted one of his own constituents; Minister Louise Haigh was sacked after it became clear that she’d been found guilty of fraud; and Rachel Reeves made stuff up on her Linked In profile.

But if you really want to know just how nasty, hateful even, the can be, look no further than the abhorrent WhatsApp posts from the now-sacked Health Minister, Andrew Gwynne. Once he’d been found out, Gwynne described his posts as “badly misjudged”.

That’s not even half of it. In one post he expressed his hope that one of his elderly constituents, who’d complained about her bins, would die. “Dear Resident, f*** your bins”, he wrote. He joked about another being mown down by an HGV. He made antisemitic remarks about an American Psychologist, asking “Is he in Mossad?” He even made disgusting remarks about his own side, particularly and .

You might have hoped that Gwynne was acting alone. But no, we now know that another Labour MP, Oliver Ryan, was part of this vile WhatsApp group, and was himself posting messages that mocked and denigrated people for their sexuality.

These aren’t just random Labour members. We’re talking about a Minister and an MP. These are people at the top echelon of the party. It’s phenomenal.

Ever since Theresa May’s staggeringly self-defeating remark, Labour has enjoyed a free ride, wallowing in the conceit that its MPs, activists and supporters are somehow the good guys. Maybe some of them actually believed it. Perhaps others knew all along it was a load of codswallop, but enjoyed it nonetheless.

Well, no more. Labour has been found out. The voters have seen through the party’s holier-than-thou shtick. We all know that the could be pretty awful too, with humiliating high-profile resignations, from Matt Hancock to Neil Parish. They’re no saints. But please let no one pretend that Labour is any better. They aren’t. In fact, they’re even worse.
