Kate Garraway has shared her heartbreak after being hit with a “tsunami of sadness” while performing a simple household task.
The Good Morning Britain presenter’s husband, Derek Draper, tragically passed away in January 2024 at the age of 56 following severe complications from .
, who documented his final year in the documentary, Kate Garraway: Derek’s Story, opened up about the struggles she faces while navigating life without her beloved husband.
Speaking to , she said: “Only the other day, I finally got round to hanging a picture that’s been waiting for years. Standing back, chuffed with my work, I thought: ‘Derek will love this when he sees it’.”
She continued: “Then, in the same second, I remembered and a whole tsunami of sadness at what is lost swept over me. But seizing all the good and new that life throws at you alongside the sad is what I am focusing on and trying to model for Darcey and Billy, too.”

Last year, Kate was given the opportunity to host a podcast and show about , which saw her travelling between the UAE and the UK, reports the Manchester Evening News.
The former ITV News Central star found it “interesting” to learn about how people lived their lives at a time when she was contemplating her own future.
Kate, mother of two and famed broadcaster, earlier this year poignantly opened up about the financial strain due to her husband Derek’s medical expenses.
She went on to question Health Secretary Wes Streeting regarding actions towards establishing a ‘National Care Service’.

Meanwhile, the new eight-part podcast series, DXB Unheard, launched earlier this week (Monday, February 10) and features various topics on Dubai, including the experiences of the city’s residents.
Each episode promises a new guest, from groundbreaking pioneers like the first Emirati female commercial pilot to a notable sports figure, an ex-England rugby player. The premiere episode shines a light on Isobel Abulhoul OBE of the Emirates Literature Foundation.
Speaking about her new role, she said: “In this series, I get to introduce you to people who want to open your eyes and your mind to another Dubai, the one that is unheard of, and explore what this city and its residents are all about.
“It is a place where east meets west, where women can and do lead the way, where science is saving resources and selflessness is saving lives.”
