A entire castle dating back almost a 1,000 years has hit the market for just £500k – but it will be made open to the public. Potential buyers have the rare chance to snap up Wigmore castle and a piece of English history for the cost as a detached family home. Nestled on the cusp of Shropshire and Herefordshire lies the hidden gem Leintwardine.
Home to a long-standing pub, a popular chip shop, and stunning nature, this village boasts unspoilt beauty.
Come summertime, Leintwardine emerges as an idyllic destination, with people drawn to its scenic River Teme for a swim. However, it’s the food that could lure you there at any time of year.
Foodies are making weekly pilgrimages for what is hailed as possibly the finest fish and chips in the West Midlands.
Since 2019, Fiddlers Elbow Fish and Chips has secured a spot in Fry Magazine’s elite list of the 50 Best Fish and Chip Takeaways consistently.

Dominic Eusden, the owner, said: “Leintwardine is a nice little village in the summer, we get a lot of customers who visit here and then travel down to the river. They treat it like a beach and enjoy having a swim after some fish and chips.”
In the vicinity, another treat awaits, where you can dine on fish and chips royally near the majestic Wigmore Castle. This historic fortress has just been sold, subject to terms, following a £50,000 price reduction, standing now at £450,000, reports .
The concept of nibbling on chips while seated upon regal throne surely trumps eating in a car splattered with curry sauce.
But if castles and chips aren’t to your fancy, the surrounding area still brims with natural landscapes waiting to be explored.
Don’t miss… [WARNING] [REVEAL]
Carding Mill Valley, a haven for hikers with its stunning views of the Shropshire Hills and home to the “mini Niagara” Lightsprout Waterfall, is a must-visit.
For those seeking a less strenuous walk, Leintwardine, located a short drive from the picturesque Mortimer Forest, is an ideal choice.
If you’re planning a day trip to the village, make sure to stop by the Sun Inn. This pub has been a staple in the village for over two centuries and was on the brink of closure when landlady Flossie Lane passed away in 2009.
However, CAMRA intervened and initiated the Save the Sun campaign, leading to a neighbour and friend of Flossie buying the property.
The Grade II-listed pub is still open for visitors today, and don’t forget to look out for the blue plaque honouring Flossie’s legacy.
Describing the pub, CAMRA said: “A remarkable pub with a remarkable history as one of Britain’s last ‘parlour’ pubs. It survived following a successful CAMRA-led “Save the Sun” campaign.”
