Collin Morikawa threw shade at his fellow American golfer Lucas Glover after his critical comments about AimPoint, suggesting the system should be banned from the

Earlier this month, Glover called for the AimPoint method to be prohibited from being utilised because it slows down play too much. It came after the conclusion of the Farmers Insurance Open and American Express, which saw golfers taking in excess of five hours to complete 18 holes.

AimPoint was designed to assist golfers is understanding the slope of the green and how putts will break. But Glover, 45, used figures to claim that the system isn’t assisting golfers, it’s actually taking more time for them to measure up their putts.

“AimPoint, statistically, hasn’t helped anybody make more putts since its inception on the PGA Tour,” Glover said on his SiriusXM PGA Tour Radio show.

“Statistics have beared that out. It’s also kind of rude to be up near the hole stomping around where the break is in your feet. It needs to be banned. It takes forever.”

Glover doesn’t appear to use AimPoint, but instead, the 2009 US Open winner he has caught some attention with his use of a 45-inch broomstick long putter.

And Morikawa couldn’t resist calling out his opponent with a tongue-in-cheek remark, suggesting such devices should be banned too.

“I have nothing against Lucas, but if we’re banning AimPoint I think we should ban long putters as well,” Morikawa said, while laughing. “I don’t know. I guess no one has said it, right? Look, AimPoint does take longer if you’re not doing it properly, if you’re not doing it when other players are reading their putts.

“I think there’s a respect issue. I think some players might get a little bit too close to the hole and I get that.

“When you get too close to the hole when someone else is putting… I don’t want my line and my putt to go over someone else’s foot and their marks.

“Are you going to tell other players not to walk around the hole when we’re picking up putts? From my perspective, AimPoint has 1,000 per cent helped me.”

As a two-time major winner, Morikawa’s opinion might not be dismissed so quickly, as there are several big names that follow his lead including Justin Rose, Dustin Johnson and Max Howa.

But it will make for an awkward meeting with Glover when the pair tee off at the Genesis Open at the Torrey Pines South Course on February 13.
