More specifically, adding a European mini-break to your itinerary could “save you hundreds” on far-flung destinations, according to one expert.

Mario Van Poppel, founder of currency exchange specialists Leftover Currency, has shared his advice on how to turn your long-haul into a money-saving adventure.

According to Van Poppel, direct flights to the US can often cost well over £1,000, especially during peak travel times.

However, routing through Lisbon on an indirect flight could slash the price significantly while giving you the chance to experience one of Europe’s most charming cities.

“The US is one of the most popular destinations for Brits each year, with iconic cities such as New York and Los Angeles always in style,” says Van Poppel.

“But the price tag for a direct flight to the States can often be upwards of £1,000 for economy seats, depending on the time of year and demand.”

Lisbon, the coastal capital of Portugal, is a particularly popular stopover for indirect flights to New York, as well as many popular Latin American destinations.

“It’s an amazing destination for arts and culture, it boasts spectacular views, and it is one of the most affordable capitals in Europe, so it’s definitely worth considering a stopover,” Van Poppel advised.

For example, a direct flight from London Heathrow to New York in early March could cost anywhere from £528 to £2,066, depending on the airline and time of booking.

In contrast, an indirect flight via Lisbon with Air Portugal was available for just £422.

While in Lisbon, passengers can soak in the city’s colourful architecture, enjoy a ride on the iconic trams, and indulge in a delicious pastel de nata—a traditional Portuguese custard tart.

With the added bonus of experiencing a new destination without the added cost of a separate holiday, it’s a win-win.

So, if you’re planning a long-haul trip to the US, consider adding a stopover in Lisbon, as not only will you save money, but you’ll also get a taste of one of Europe’s most vibrant cities.
