People were evacuated from a Sheffield apartment building overnight amid concerns over a man alleged to have weapons.

Roads near the scene, including the Sheffield Parkway between Park Square roundabout and Derek Dooley Way, were expected to remain closed into Tuesday morning.

South Yorkshire Police confirmed they were called to the property after 7pm on Monday with reports a man inside had weapons.

A Facebook post from the force said: “Those within the building where the property is have been evacuated, and those within the neighbouring buildings have been asked to stay indoors while officers conduct their work.”

Police and other emergency services remained on the scene in Broad Street early on Tuesday.

Trams are also affected by the shutdown, and commuters are advised to plan ahead and find an alternative route.

South Yorkshire Travel posted: “Due to a police incident Sheffield Parkway is closed between the Park Square roundabout and Derek Dooley Way and Trams are unable to operate towards the city centre.

Travellers advised to check journeys before setting off

The spokesman added: “The Sheffield Parkway, between Park Square roundabout and Derek Dooley Way will remain shut-please plan, and find an alternative route this morning.

“Trams are also affected in the area and those travelling are advised to check Travel South Yorkshire.”

Man ‘poses a risk to himself’

A South Yorkshire Police spokesman said: “We, alongside other emergency services remain on scene at Broad Street in Sheffield.

“Just after 7pm last night (Monday 10 February) we responded to concerns for a man inside a property, alleged to have weapons and pose a risk to himself.

“Those within the building where the property is have been evacuated and those within the neighbouring buildings have been asked to stay indoors while officers conduct their work.”
