Lisandro Martinez has launched an explosive social media attack on icon Paul Scholes after he claimed the club couldn’t win the Premier League with him in defence. Martinez is set to undergo surgery this week to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee.

The 27-year-old faces several months on the sidelines after suffering the devastating injury in United’s 2-0 defeat against Crystal Palace earlier this month.

But Scholes rubbed salt in the wounds on a recent episode of The Overlap by questioning how big a blow losing Martinez would actually be for .

Sat alongside Jamie Carragher for the latest , Scholes said: “Even when he [Martinez] is fit, he’s not good enough to win the Premier League with.”

Martinez has since been pictured biting back on , commenting on a post referring to the Old Trafford great’s brutal assessment.

“This jinx guy is really hurting… You put him in Argentina, and he wouldn’t survive,” the South American centre-back responded.

Scholes didn’t solely target Martinez with his criticism, also airing doubts about United’s £102million pair of summer signings – and Leny Yoro.

He added: “His [De Ligt’s] age and his amount of clubs already concerns me.

“He was brilliant at Ajax, [but] he seems to be getting worse as he gets older. , , they’ve let him go for some reason.

“Where are your ambitions? I’m talking about getting a team to win the Premier League. Are you going to win the Premier League with De Ligt and Yoro as your centre-halves?

“You [a fan] said you think they’re quite good. Is quite good good enough?’

“Look, he’s [Yoro’s] a young player, but I haven’t liked what I’ve seen so far.

“Did you see the Southampton game? He’s a young player; he’s one centre-half I would keep when I talk about that spine and two centre-halves.”

Martinez was one of Amorim’s most important players since his November arrival before suffering his latest injury setback.

He will miss the remainder of the season and potentially the calendar year, which could prompt United into action this summer, with Victor Lindelof and Jonny Evans’ contracts expiring.

Scholes wants to see Amorim backed with a revamp, including a couple of new defenders, ahead of his first full season at the helm.

“I think a new goalkeeper is needed, possibly two centre-halves, two central midfield players, and two centre-forwards,” he claimed.
