Super Bowl fans boycott Kendrick Lamar halftime show after controversial Jesus costume

fans are turning their backs on Kendrick Lamar’s highly-anticipated halftime performance, with many accusing the rapper of promoting a controversial agenda.

Social media has been set ablaze with claims that Lamar, a global superstar known for his hard-hitting lyrics, is a “radical abortion activist who mocks Jesus.” Outraged viewers have taken to platforms like X to voice their fury, with some calling for a boycott of the show altogether.

“Kendrick Lamar is a radical abortion activist who mocks Jesus. We NOT be watching his halftime performance at the Super Bowl,” said one fan.

Another viewer blasted: “I will be boycotting Kendrick Lamar’s Super Bowl Halftime Show. Anyone that mocks Jesus Christ by wearing a crown of thorns […] doesn’t deserve the support of Christians…”

A third echoed: Kendrick Lamar (whoever that is) will be ‘performing’ the Super Bowl halftime show. Here he is rapping to a blasphemous rendition of Jesus and pro-abortion. Will NOT be watching this vile filth! @NFL ruins everything!”

The backlash stems form the rapper’s performance at Glastonbury msuic festival in 2022, when Lamar did a performance while wearing a crown of thorns and offering his support for abortion rights in the aftermath of the effective repeal of the Roe v. Wade decision.

Many users were offended by the decision, asserting that he was insulting Christianity and Jesus Christ by his portrayal and that he was performing “a satanic rap” in his performance.

This won’t be the first time that the 22-time Grammy winner is appearing on stage for the Super Bowl Halftime Show. He was previously a performer in the Super Bowl 56 halftime show alongside the likes of Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre, Eminem and Mary J. Blige.

During an interview for the Apple Music Super Bowl press conference on Thursday (Febuary 6), where he was asked what people could expect in his set, he said: “Storytelling.

“I’ve always been very open about storytelling through all my catalogue and my history of music. And I’ve always had a passion about bringing that on whatever stage I’m on.”

Although highly anticipated, the announcement didn’t go without sparking some additional tension in hip-hop, specifically after public comments by rapper Lil Wayne, who wanted to headline the show in his hometown.

The NFL’s decision ignited major debate on social media among fans and hip-hop pundits, with some stating that Lil Wayne – born and raised in the Big Easy – should have been selected instead.

“No shade to K.Dot, but the NFL really should’ve tried to get Lil Wayne to perform in NEW ORLEANS for the Superbowl,” one fan said on X.

Rap icon and Lil Wayne’s protégé, Nicki Minaj, defended him, saying he “inspired your faves to wanna be a great MC.” Rappers Cam’ron and Mase also discussed the topic on their podcast, It Is What It Is.

“I love Kendrick Lamar. I think he’s one of the top artists of this generation, period. Hate this selection,” Cam’ron said at the time. “It’s in New Orleans. You don’t get Lil Wayne? That’s what we doing?”
