With constant cold snaps hitting the UK, households are switching on their heating to stay warm.

In the UK, you can turn off your heating when the outside is consistently above 14C, which is usually at the beginning of spring.

With average UK temperatures sitting at 6.3C for February and 8C to 12C for March, homeowners may be looking for ways to save on heating until the improves.

Stephen Day, heating engineer at has revealed the optimal temperature the nation should set their thermostat at to keep warm and keep their bills in check.

According to the expert, you should set your thermostat between 18C to 20C when the outdoor temperature is below 15C.

“This range strikes the perfect balance between comfort and efficiency,” Day explains. “It’s warm enough to ensure the home feels cosy, but not so high that it results in unnecessary energy consumption, keeping your bills in check.”

This is especially true in the current climate where every penny counts. By reducing your thermostat by just 1C, you can reduce your heating bill by as much as a whopping .

However, rather than just blasting your heating on this temperature all day, Day recommends taking advantage of the thermostatic controls on your heating system.

He said: “One of the easiest and most efficient ways to keep your home consistently between 18C and 20C is by setting a schedule on your heating system.

“Many modern boilers come equipped with programmable thermostats that allow homeowners to pre-set temperatures according to their daily routines, while smart thermostats can be controlled via your phone.”

Those with children, elderly, or vulnerable people in the home especially need to keep to this temperature range as they are more likely to struggle with temperature regulation.

“For the really vulnerable or young, 21C might be slightly more comfortable, but always keep an eye out for any signs of overheating. Well-insulated homes can trap a lot of heat and become too warm fast.”
