Netflix embarked on its streaming journey in January 2007 with the launch of its media service, Watch Now, enabling subscribers to enjoy content online. The platform’s first original series, Lilyhammer, hit screens in 2011.
This crime comedy-drama starred Steven Van Zandt as Frank “The Fixer” Tagliano, a former New York gangster. Following this, began experimenting with various formats, including its first distributed films and investments in popular dramas and comedies.
The year 2015 marked a significant expansion for the streaming giant, reaching audiences in Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Italy, Portugal and Spain.
Here are five originals that have achieved a significant milestone, celebrating ten years since their inception.
Grace and Frankie
In 2015, noted the enduring popularity of Friends on its platform. Keen to replicate this success, it developed a new series that would become ‘s longest-running scripted show.
Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin headline the series, which narrates the tale of two women whose husbands reveal they are gay and embark on a relationship together. Now single, the women navigate their later life embarking on fresh adventures.

Daredevil
Daredevil was among the first shows to air on and had ties with the already successful Marvel franchise. Jessica Jones would follow later in 2015, but Daredevil signalled the dawn of a new era of TV series boasting movie-level quality.
Charlie Cox starred as a blind superhero operating in New York City, both as a vigilante and lawyer, in the series that sadly left after it was moved to Disney+ in March 2022.

Master of None
The comedy series Master of None, created by Aziz Ansari and Alan Yang, featured Ansari in the lead role of Dev Shah for the first two seasons.
The award-winning series ran for three seasons with Lena Waithe’s character Denise taking the lead in the final season. Inspired by Ansari’s personal experiences, the show was part of a significant trend of comedians getting their own shows and was included on many lists of the best TV shows of 2015.

F is for Family
As was just starting to establish its adult animated series, the comedy F is for Family launched in December 2015. Comedian Bill Burr teamed up with The Simpsons veteran Michael Price for this five-season masterpiece, where Burr played Frank Murphy, a father managing a dysfunctional household.
The series received positive reviews throughout its entire run, earning particular praise for its stark portrayal of 1970s America.

Beasts of No Nation
‘s first original film, Beasts of No Nation, starred .
Based on the 2005 novel by Uzodinma Iweala, it tells the story of a young boy recruited into an ongoing civil war conflict. After receiving positive reviews, the movie went on to have a limited theatrical release.
‘s stellar performance garnered him nominations for the BAFTA, Golden Globe, Spirit, and SAG Award for Best Supporting Actor, with the actor clinching victories in the latter two.
