Call the Midwife’s Dr Turner star calls for spin-off series with beloved characters

Stephen McGann, the Call the Midwife stalwart known for portraying Dr. Turner, has revealed the possibility of a spin-off that would spotlight Miss Higgins and Nurse Crane.

At a press gathering last year, he applauded his colleagues Georgie Glen and Linda Bassett for their “superb” on-screen dynamic, suggesting that show bosses should seriously consider a show centered around the duo.

“They are so brilliant. As a double act, they are brilliant,” Stephen remarked, highlighting how the show’s commitment to representing women of various ages has been a cornerstone of its success.

“One of the lynchpins of our programme, because it focuses on the lives principally of women, has been women and women’s lives but the ages have been very open. We’ve been quite forward-thinking with a whole age range of people. It’s not just a young people show.”

“When I see scenes [of Miss Higgins and Nurse Crane], you are reminded of that,” he added, reinforcing his call for a spin-off: “The spin-off needs to happen at some point because these two are just superb,” reports .

Georgie Glen, who graced The Crown and entered Call the Midwife in its eighth season in 2018, also expressed her appreciation for her character’s genuine friendship with Nurse Crane, likening it to those her mother cherished.

Linda Bassett, a constant presence since the fourth season aired in 2014, also champions the representation of strong female bonds on screen.

Set in the heart of London’s East End, Call the Midwife tracks the heartfelt endeavours of nurses and midwives at Nonnatus House, drawing inspiration from Jennifer Worth’s acclaimed memoirs.

The latest season of the beloved One series, set in 1970 Poplar, is currently on air. The new decade saw Trixie (Helen George) returning from New York, while Sister Julienne (Jenny Agutter) took on the Board of Health over criticisms of Nonnatus House.

In the most recent episode, aired on Sunday (February 9), viewers watched as Joyce (Renee Bailey) grappled with caring for a mother suffering from postnatal complications.

Adding to the drama, a local bin men strike resulted in an unsanitary pile of waste attracting rats outside Nonnatus House, leading to an outbreak of Weil’s disease.

This illness impacted some of the show’s favourite characters, including Rosalind (Natalie Quarry) and Nigel the cat – who tragically succumbed to his illness.
