BBC fans had one major issue with the new detective crime drama, Virdee, just seconds into the opening scene as Detective Harry Virdee (Staz Nair) was seen giving chase to a suspect in the disappearance of a teenager.

The opening shots saw him slam open some doors in a delipidated warehouse at night before giving chase through the streets. The camera zoomed in and out from all angles for several minutes before the pair dove under an oncoming train.

Despite the high action, fans were left “feeling sick” and slamming the footage as “nauseating”.

“I still feel sick from the camera work. It was so jumpy I could actually be sick!” blasted one fan.

Another echoed: “What’s with the dodgy camera angles on #Virdee it’s making me want to vom..” and a third agreed: “#virdee lost me with the nauseating camera work.”

The series delves into Virdee’s personal and professional challenges, including his estrangement from his Sikh family due to his marriage to Saima, a Muslim woman. Their interfaith relationship is set to be a significant aspect of the storyline.

While Detective Harry Virdee is very much preoccupied with a major gang investigation, we discover that the detective actually has some ties to this underworld of his own. Namely, that one of the city’s most successful businessmen – and head of one of the gangs in question – is none other than his brother-in-law and childhood friend, Riaz (Vikash Bhai).

The cast spoke highly of Bradford as a city and the sense of community that was clear from the get-go. With author Amit Dhand referring to it as “the best city in the world”.

Nair said: “I think Bradford’s pride for itself was very evident doing this show and there’s something very infectious about that.”

He added: “Once you’ve done the work it’s no longer mine anymore, now it’s what the people think and I really hope they enjoy it as much as we enjoyed making it for them.”

Playing Harry Virdee is Staz Nair, best known for his previous roles in Game of Thrones and Rebel Moon, he described the experience as “a dream.” He said: “As someone who wasn’t fortunate enough to spend time with my South Asian culture, this was an opportunity to delve into that culture and get a real glimpse of what that feels like – what we’re proud of and what we stand for.”

Nair added: “I think Bradford’s pride for itself was very evident doing this show and there’s something very infectious about that.”
