Alexander Zverev nightmare as luggage lands 8,700 miles away from tournament

There’s been more misery for although this time, it’s come off the court. Just weeks after being beaten in the final of the by , the German star has been left downbeat after arriving in Buenos Aires for the Argentina Open.

Zverev, 27, is the top seed for the ATP 250 event, having decided to head to South America instead of competing in indoor tournaments in Europe.

It appears part that the world No.2 is opting to prioritise his preparation for the by playing on clay, as his quest for a maiden Slam title continues.

But he may have to play the tournament without much of his favoured gear or equipment. Zverez landed at the airport in Buenos Aires only to find his luggage had not been boarded properly on his flight.

To make matters worse, the star’s bags weren’t exactly sent to a neighbouring country either. Instead, Zverev learnt his bag had been sent to the Maldives, some 8,700 miles away from his current destination.

He reportedly took the mishap in good humour, joking that now he couldn’t play tennis he would enjoy a holiday instead. But on , he took aim at the authorities, suggesting they were actually the ones who needed a break.

The German posted: “Could anyone explain to me how on earth it is possible for me to fly from Rome to Buenos Aires but my bags instead of coming with me being sent to the Maldives? I guess they need a vacation already.”

At least Zverev has been afforded an extra 24 hours for his luggage to be redirected. He has a bye in the first round and will face either Dusan Lajovic or Roberto Carballes Baena in the second stage.

Last month, Zverev cut a disconsolate figure . It followed him also losing the French Open final to last year, and famously blowing a two-set leave against Dominic Thiem in the 2020 final.

“It was a difficult moment for me,” Zverev said after the . “Now, for the third time, seeing somebody lift the trophy and me standing next to that is difficult because there’s nothing more I want than to be able to hold one of those trophies in my hands.”

This year’s Slam at Roland Garros gets underway on May 25. Zverev will hope to go deep into the tournament on his strongest surface, having reached the semi-final in 2024 before being derailed by a serious ankle injury.
