The and a city that lies in the shadow of the great Mount Vesuvius, Naples has been named as one of the best places in to visit for a weekend trip this year by renowned travel guidebook company Lonely Planet.

This may come as a surprise to many, as Naples has earned the reputation of one of the least welcoming cities in . It is known for suffering from high levels of pollution and crime, cramped streets, and severely lacks green and open spaces.

But these negatives don’t seem to have put off the travel experts at Lonely Planet.

It wrote: “Italy’s third-largest city, Naples is both chaotic and cultured, opulent and gritty, exuberant and understated, with architectural gems around every corner.”

The travel company has created a step-by-step guide to make the most of your 48 hours in the city, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in everything this great city has to offer.

Once at the summit, you are rewarded with breathtaking views of the 450-metre-wide crater, where you can often watch steam and sulphur-rich gases rising from its vents.

Next, Lonely Planet recommends hopping on a ferry to the stunning island of . This island is home to the most beautiful beaches and hundreds of natural hot springs, where you can rest your tired legs after a full day of exploring.

Naples is the birthplace of pizza, so it is essential to sample some of the options on offer for your evening meal.

Lonely Planet said: “While everyone has their favorite spots, Starita and Gino Sorbillo are reliable choices.”

Since your trip only lasts a couple of days, it is worth splashing out on your hotel of choice. The travel company recommends a stay at the lavishly decorated Art Resort Galleria Umberto, located in Galleria Umberto I. Here you can relax in a marble bathroom and among modern artwork for the night.

On your second day, book a walking tour to descend into Naples’ underground to explore sites like the Catacombe di San Gennaro, which contains early Christian burial chambers.

In your last few hours in Italy, visit the island of and explore by bike. Its pretty, colourful houses arranged like an amphitheatre facing the sea is one of the most enchanting harbours on the Bay of Naples.

Airlines such , Ryanair and British Airways offer direct flights to Naples International Airport from across the UK, including from Luton, Bristol and Gatwick. With easyJet, you could be exploring Naples’ streets in as little as two-and-a-half hours from for just £144 return in March.

Winter temperatures in Naples are lovely too – warm enough to get out and about but not so hot that you’ll be sweating. With an average high of 15C in February, it’s a great time to explore.
