A less well-known UK has been called “more refined” than its famous neighbour.

possesses a great bounty of coastal towns, including  is located right next to Torquay.

Walking her dog along the former’s seafront, a woman told : “I love Teignmouth.”

“It’s more refined and interesting than places like Torquay. It feels like there’s more culture here. The people are posher too, much nicer.”

“I’m just being honest,” she added.

Torquay is not known as the “Gem of South Devon” for nothing, boasting many distinct charms. But Teignmouth has its own things to be proud about.

“You have to look up,” a shopper said. “Teignmouth is so interesting. Most people don’t look up at the buildings. There is so much interesting architecture here.”

Wayne Pearce is manager at the town’s oldest pub, Ye Olde Jolly Sailor. He said: “Teignmouth is a very seasonal town. In winter it isn’t the busiest but during the summer as you can imagine it is a very busy period for us.

“The locals keep us ticking over in the winter. I’d the say the vibe in the town is that it’s a really lovely place with a lot to offer.”

He also said: “It’s a great location. We have a really nice beach. It’s very much a fishing town and a lot of pubs are really into live music.”

But there is less positive aspect of the seaside settlement. Mr Pearce added: “The only problem is I feel there are a lot of coffee shops and charity shops and nothing really for the younger generation.”

Malcolm Adams, 76, a jobbing musician who once supported famous acts like Georgie Fame, Alan Price and The Searchers, said: “It’s a lovely little town. The pubs are lovely. There are lots of local bands playing.

“It’s a shame they closed the youth club because I think there should be more for younger people to do.”

Shop worker Pete Kernot agreed.

He said: “It’s very quiet in the winter as you would expect. The whole place changes in the summer. Teignmouth has a lot to offer but I can see how younger people might get a bit bored and want to leave.”
