On a quest to right some wrongs about a poor African country, a traveller discovered that despite Burundi being one of the poorest nations in the world, it is actually home to wonderful people and amazing scenery.

With a population of over 14 million, Burundi was embroiled in a civil war from 1993 to 2005 and since then has struggled to emerge from the 12-year, ethnic-based civil war.

It is one of the world’s least developed countries and faces widespread poverty, corruption and instability.

However, the country is home to an array of stunning national parks, including the Kibira National Park, which lies atop the mountains of the Congo-Nile Divide.

The natural treasure houses lush forests, amazing waterfalls, and rich biodiversity.

Explore with Bertin went on a mission to show people across the world what Burandi has to offer.

Bertin started his two night stay in one of Bujumbura’s tallest buildings. Bujumbura is the country’s largest city and main port area. It ships most of the country’s chief exports including coffee, cotton and tin ore.

He said: “The way people talk about Burundi, it is as if no good things come from here.

“There are new towers being built in Bujumbura. It is a beautiful city that you never see on TV. I like the mountains. They are very beautiful.

“The city is very clean, very organised, and this place has a lot of banks, offices.”

In 2018, World Happiness Report ranked the country as the world’s least happy, with a rank of 156. However, during Bertin’s visit he spoke to an array of locals, who seemed more than content with their way of life.

One local said:  “Life in Burundi is great. We have very good people, we have hospitality, we have everything.

“We have beautiful places to visit like Rumonge. Rumonge has something called Amashuha. It is natural cold water and it is a very wonderful place to visit.”

Burundi’s best year in tourism was 2018, when the country recorded nearly 300,000 foreign visitors and made $12.8 million in tourism revenue.
