Emergency landing as easyJet pilot collapses in middle of flight from Egypt to UK

An flight from Hurghada, , to was forced to make an emergency landing in Athens after one of the pilots suffered a medical emergency mid-flight.

The dramatic incident left passengers terrified as the remaining pilot navigated the aircraft to safety.

The flight, which had been airborne for approximately two hours, was diverted after the medical situation unfolded in the cockpit.

Passengers recalled that cabin crew had been serving drinks when they suddenly rushed to the front of the plane.

At first, many believed a passenger had fallen ill, but panic grew when it became clear that the person requiring urgent medical attention was the captain.

A screen was pulled across the front of the plane to provide privacy as medically trained passengers assisted the crew.

Soon after, the announcement came: the captain had become unwell, and the co-pilot would have to execute an emergency landing.

Passengers described the experience as frightening, with turbulence adding to their anxiety.

“The ride became very rough and scary,” one passenger told .

“As we approached the runway, we saw emergency services lined up, including fire engines, police, and ambulances.”

The landing itself was described as “rocky and rough,” causing further distress among those onboard.

One passenger suffered a panic attack and required oxygen. Despite the chaos, passengers praised the professionalism of the co-pilot and cabin crew, crediting them for keeping everyone calm and landing the aircraft safely.

In a statement, EasyJet said: “EasyJet can confirm that flight EZY2252 from Hurghada to Manchester yesterday evening was diverted to Athens due to the Captain requiring medical assistance.

“The First Officer performed a routine landing in accordance with standard operating procedures and the aircraft was met by paramedics on arrival in Athens.”

The airline also apologised for the disruption and assured passengers they were provided with accommodation and meals where available.

The onward flight to Manchester was rescheduled for the following day.

The cause of the captain’s medical emergency has not been disclosed.
