The tiny European village that’s building an incredible 182-foot tall monument

has begun the construction of a huge statue that will dwarf Rio’s famous Christ the Reedemer.

The new construction once finished will be Poland’s largest statue of Mary. Measuring at a heigh of around 182ft the monument is set to be taller than the Brazilian landmark by an impressive 56ft.

is the small village which will house the new monument, located in the county of Lipno about 23m from picturesque Toruń.

Whilst the total height of the structure will be 182.4ft tall, the actual statue of Virgin Mary will measure just over 130ft and a pedestal in the form of a crown will be used as an observation deck.

The new monument was thought up by and financed by billionaire Roman Karkosik and his wife Grazyna. The couple are amongst some of Poland’s richest people.

The town has known about the project since 2023, while the reason it was chosen as the location is quite intriguing.

It will be in the vicinity of the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Sorrow in Konotop – known for its . The site has drawn pilgrims for across Poland for many years.

Now, local authorities are hoping that the new addition will not only increase the village’s number of visitors but also make the region known worldwide.

Kikol’s mayor Renata Golebiewska said: “We hope that tourists and pilgrims will come to us and see what a beautiful muncipality we have by the way.”

The Virgin Mary statue will also be a play of prayer and an important venue for cultural events. The construction work is expected to be completed by mid-2026.

Although it doesn’t quite make it as the tallest Virgin Mary statue, the monument is expected to be a significant landmark to both local residents and visitors – adding to a number of significant religions monuments around Poland.

The honour of hosting the tallest Mary statue belongs to the Philippines.
