Way back in 1994, when the World Cup came to North America for the first time, a ticket for the tournament could be had for as little as US$25 in the group stages. By the time the final rolled around, it would have cost you around $300 to watch Roberto Baggio sky his penalty kick over the bar.

Even factoring in inflation — that’s about $560 in 2024 greenbacks — the prices weren’t obscene.

Well, buckle up folks, because the 2026 World Cup is fast approaching.

Vancouver Whitecaps season-ticket holders were given a glimpse into the eye-watering heights passes are expected to be sold for at next year’s tournament. For a seven-game hospitality package, which includes food and beverages, a single person can expect to fork out US$15,950 — or Cdn$22,806.11 at Saturday’s exchange rate — for your seat at B.C. Place.

You could also opt for just the first four group stage matches, which start at US$8,100 (Cdn$11,581.78), should you feel budgetary constraints.

Perhaps the B.C. Place staff will let you collect all your empty cans from your beverage consumption to help defray the cost.

Meanwhile, here’s some things you can buy for $23K in Vancouver:

— A brand-new 2024 Nissan Kicks or Mitsubishi Mirage

— 16 Unlimited use adult season passes for Whistler (45 for kids age 7-12, or 26 teen passes)

— 2,928 Big Macs.

— 115 Valentines pendants from a certain Vancouver jeweller extremely popular with Canucks radio listeners. And the expensive version of it, to boot.

— You’re already a Whitecaps STH, but two tickets in the supporters section for 2024 was around $825. That’s 52 Southsiders/Southsiders/Albion/Rain City Brigade you could foot the bill for.

The prices will range from $724 to $1,408. Now, Category 4 tickets — the cheapest ones, usually nosebleeds or obstructed view seats — can be had for as little as $21 (predicted, remember) for a group stage game, but that’ll jump to $128 for the final. Average seats will range from $323 to $1,550. And those stadiums with limited seating — we’re looking at you, BMO Field — will likely see prices at a premium compared to larger facilities.
