For many, such mild weather in the middle of winter is unheard of, yet for the Isles of Scilly, it’s not an unusual occurrence.
The secret behind this winter escape lies in the islands’ unique microclimate. Positioned within the warming influence of the Gulf Stream, they enjoy far milder winters than the rest of the UK.
Unlike mainland Britain, where temperatures regularly plunge below freezing, the Isles of Scilly rarely drop below 8°C.
In fact, there’s only about a 10-degree difference between January’s average temperature and the height of summer in August, making it one of the most consistent climates in the country.

While this recent warm spell was slightly above the norm, the Isles of Scilly are no stranger to comfortable winter weather.
The combination of gentle sea breezes, reduced pollution, and extended sunshine hours means that, even when the rest of the UK is wrapped up in scarves and gloves, Scillonians can enjoy a light jacket, or even shorts, if the sun is strong enough.
With their pristine beaches, crystal-clear waters, and lush botanical gardens, the Isles of Scilly remain a year-round haven for those looking to escape the winter blues.
While many Brits head abroad in search of winter sun, this slice of paradise offers an alternative much closer to home. Whether for a peaceful retreat or a refreshing seaside walk, the Isles of Scilly prove that even in the middle of winter, Britain has its own warm-weather getaway.
