The UK is home to some of the most beautiful in Europe, from to the rugged coastlines of Scotland.
Each summer, thousands of people flock to the seaside to soak up the sun, swim in the ocean, and enjoy traditional fish and chips by the shore.
However, not all British beaches boast crystal-clear waters and picturesque scenery. Some have earned a far less desirable reputation due to high levels of , particularly from .
A new study by Holiday Park Guru has exposed the worst offenders, revealing which UK beaches have the dirtiest waters.
Using data from the Environment Agency, the travel site identified 13 beaches that received a ‘poor’ rating for water quality and awarded them the unenviable title of ‘Brown Flag’ winners.

Shockingly, even popular coastal destinations such as Cornwall and Norfolk made the list, proving that no region is immune to the pollution problem.
Topping the list as the worst beach for water quality is Porthluney in Cornwall, followed by Southsea East in Hampshire and St Mary’s Bay in Kent.
While this trio of locations were named the worst, the study highlights a worrying trend across the UK.
Lancashire performed particularly badly overall, with none of its ten bathing spots achieving an ‘excellent’ rating.
Both Blackpool North and St Annes North were given ‘poor’ scores, reinforcing concerns about water safety in the region.

According to the research, the following seaside spots have been flagged for having the worst water quality in the UK:
- Porthluney, Cornwall
- Southsea East, Hampshire
- St Mary’s Bay, Kent
- Littlestone, Kent
- Blackpool North, Lancashire
- St Annes North, Lancashire
- Heacham, Norfolk
- Weston Main, Weston Super Mare Sand Bay, and Weston Super Mare Uphill Slipway, Somerset
- Dunster Beach, Somerset
- Bognor Regis Aldwick, Sussex
- Tynemouth Cullercoats, Tyne and Wear
- Scarborough South Bay, North Yorkshire
- Bridlington South Beach, East Riding of Yorkshire
The results serve as a stark warning for beachgoers who may unknowingly be swimming in polluted waters. The presence of bacteria from sewage spills and agricultural run-off can pose significant health risks, with experts urging the public to check water quality reports before taking a dip.
