Unlike traditional bumper-mounted electric winches, which are typically installed aftermarket, the patented system integrates directly into an EV’s drivetrain. The design allows the winch to draw power from the vehicle’s existing traction motor, eliminating the need for a separate electric winch motor.
The system redirects torque from the front or rear axle through a planetary gear set to drive the winch spool. The patent does not specify an exact location for the winch but suggests the possibility of front and rear winches or a combination of both.
While the patent does not reference any specific model, it could be relevant to future Jeep off-road EVs, such as the upcoming Jeep Recon EV or any Trailhawk version, perhaps as an option. The idea of a factory-backed and installed winch will undoubtedly appeal to buyers looking for a built-in recovery solution while maintaining a streamlined exterior appearance. However, many like the looks of a winch on a steel bumper.
Though the timing of production implementation remains uncertain, Stellantis’ patent, originally filed on January 25, 2024, and granted on January 21, 2025, shows that the automaker is hard at work developing EV-focused off-road technology.
