Peace lily leaves can quickly turn brown if it’s not watered correctly
, known for their vibrant green foliage, can present a challenging issue when their tips start to brown, despite the plant looking healthy overall.
However, there’s a straightforward fix for this common problem that many indoor enthusiasts encounter.
Leslie, a owner and gardening guru from , has shed light on why peace lilies often need a bit of TLC.
She has pinpointed their sensitivity to a particular chemical found in tap water.
In an online video, Leslie asked: “Do you have a peace lily or spider plant whose leaves keep turning brown on the tips but otherwise seems pretty healthy?”
Nobody wants to see brown spots appearing on their peace lily leaves
She continued, revealing her own experience: “Mine used to get pretty bad with several inches of brown dry parts at the end of the leaves, and I didn’t really know why until recently.”
The culprit behind the browning tips is chlorine, which can scorch the delicate ends of the peace lily’s leaves.
To combat this, Leslie offers a simple solution: “All I do is simply sit my water out. Your city water likely has chlorine in it, and sitting my water out for about 24 to 48 hours will allow the chlorine to evaporate.
“It’s the chlorine that is causing the tips of the leaves to go brown so if you just set your water out and let it evaporate then you will no longer have that problem.”
Don’t miss… [UPDATE]
Given that chlorine is commonly found in city water supplies, it’s essential to let it evaporate before watering plants like peace lilies to prevent leaf tip burn.
Simply leave your houseplant water to stand for a day or two and the chlorine will naturally disappear.
Alternatively, if you can’t wait that long, rainwater is also suitable for watering peace lilies. However, it’s not advisable to use distilled water as it lacks many beneficial minerals essential for your houseplants.
In a few weeks’ time, your peace lily should regain its lush green appearance. If brown tips persist, it could be a sign of underwatering.
Peace lilies need watering once a week when the top half of the potting soil has dried out but before the leaves start to droop.
Ensure the plant is in a pot with well-draining soil, as waterlogged peace lilies can develop rotting roots and become susceptible to diseases.
Peace lilies flourish in humid conditions, so if brown tips continue to appear, try relocating them to your bathroom or kitchen.
If browning leaves persist, it could be due to other common mistakes made by houseplant owners during winter.
